If They Don’t See Black; Perhaps They’ll See Green

I commend the professional athletes who agreed it’s time to stop playing, both literally and figuratively. The NFL and all of us Got Next. Black people, woke people, the time has come for us to use our power like the currency it is. We have to hit them where it really hurts; in the wallet. This movement is about the value of black lives, but the only color that will ultimately get their attention is the color green. Lest we forget, money is what really matters in this society.

So Lebron and his NBA brethren are on point; it is time to call a time out, for real. Black and woke folks don’t have to spend our money on brunches, beauty salons, clothes, cars and other nice to have items that are peddled by entities who aren’t playing on our team. While many companies have issued obligatory statements in recent weeks, most are continuing to do business as usual. We cannot keep playing their game while they continue to give us the okey doke. Whether you are Lebron James or Jimmy from the block, our value is far greater than a designer hand bag and a selfie at a trendy spot.

Imagine comedy without black comedians. Imagine music without black singers, producers and rappers; imagine prime time TV without black actors, producers and directors. Without our creativity, soulfulness and athletic gifts, the world will be a far less colorful, compelling and lucrative place to be for those who are counting their billions on our backs..

Those who got it like that should follow their brothers and sisters on the court and field and take a time out. You can afford it and we can’t afford for you not to make your voices heard.

For those of us regular folk who are just trying to get by, let’s stop buying stuff made by people who don’t give a damn about us.

The boycott was an effective tool in the Civil rights movement of the 1960s; let’s go old school and bump it up a notch. It is time to redirect our God given talents for a cause that will give back to us. It’s time to stop playing.
